Stage 4: Disability Awareness Session for Years 7 & 8
Stage 4 (Years 7–8)
In Stage 4, students are introduced to disability through lived experience, open discussion, and interactive learning. This stage focuses on building foundational understanding of physical, sensory, and non-visible disabilities, while encouraging empathy, respectful language, and inclusive behaviour.
Students explore how barriers are often created by environments rather than individuals, and begin to reflect on their own assumptions and attitudes. The program aligns with NSW curriculum outcomes in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), Civics and Citizenship, and General Capabilities such as Ethical Understanding and Personal and Social Capability, supporting respectful relationships and inclusive school communities.
After participating in Step Up or Roll On
Students will be able to:
-
Identify different types of disabilities (physical, sensory, and non-visible)
-
Explain the difference between a disability and a barrier
-
Demonstrate respectful language when discussing disability
-
Describe at least one way they can promote inclusion within their school
