Learn More About Step Up or Roll On

What Is Step Up or Roll On?

Step Up or Roll On is a curriculum-aligned disability awareness incursion delivered to NSW high schools across Stages 4, 5, and 6. Led by lived experience, each 90-minute session combines storytelling, discussion, reflection, and interactive learning to help students build understanding and empathy in meaningful, age-appropriate ways.

Rather than focusing on disability as a limitation, the program explores accessibility, inclusion, and the role we all play in shaping respectful communities. Students are encouraged to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and reflect on how environments and attitudes can either create barriers or foster belonging.

What Makes Our Program Different?

Our sessions are grounded in lived experience and professional practice. Students engage with real stories, real challenges, and real solutions — not just theory.

We focus on:

  • Physical, sensory, and non-visible disabilities

  • Barriers vs accessibility

  • Respectful communication

  • Allyship and inclusive leadership

  • Real-world societal impact

By modelling inclusion within the session itself, we demonstrate how small changes in language, design, and behaviour can make significant differences.

What Students Gain

Students leave the session able to:

  • Recognise different forms of disability

  • Understand how environments create barriers

  • Use respectful and inclusive language

  • Reflect on personal assumptions and bias

  • Identify practical ways to support inclusion

  • Move from awareness to active allyship

For senior students, sessions extend into critical discussion around ethics, rights, advocacy, and societal responsibility.

Curriculum Alignment

Each session is mapped to the NSW curriculum and supports General Capabilities including:

  • Ethical Understanding

  • Personal and Social Capability

  • Critical and Creative Thinking

  • Intercultural Understanding

The program complements learning across PDHPE, Civics and Citizenship, Community and Family Studies, Society and Culture, Legal Studies, and related subjects.

Why It Matters

Inclusion is not simply a personal issue — it is a societal responsibility. By educating young people early, we help build future communities grounded in understanding, accessibility, and respect.
